The author of the Epistle to the Hebrews reminds the readers that we need to have patience while waiting to receive our promises from the Lord (Hebrews 10:36). Sometimes, we have done what the Lord has asked of us, and we are living the way the Lord wants, but it seems like we're not receiving what the Lord has promised. The writer then lists the roll call of faith in Hebrews chapter 11 and talks of Abel, Enoch, Noah, Abraham, Sarah, and others, and encourages us to walk in faith like them.
He points out that those walking in faith were really believing for something greater from the Lord. Abel and Enoch were looking for a relationship with the Lord. Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob were looking for the kingdom of God.
Most of these people of faith walked according to the Lord's words and promises for years before receiving a portion of the promise. The Bible says that they saw the greater promises of relationship with the Lord from a distance, and this encouraged them to keep on walking in faith (Hebrews 11:13).
The writer of Hebrews speaks to us today. If the Lord has given you a promise by verse, in a dream, in prayer, by a spoken word in your heart, and confirmed the promise, then keep on reaching for the promise of the Lord. As the Bible says, "For ye have need of patience, that, after ye have done the will of God, ye might receive the promise" (Hebrews 10:36).
Again, in Hebrews 6:12, "That ye be not slothful, but followers of them who through faith and patience inherit the promises." Has God spoken to your heart? Hold onto whatever promises the Lord has given you. The Lord is faithful.
