While talking to the Pharisees and Jews in Jerusalem, Jesus made this statement to those that believed in Him: "If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed; And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free" (John 8:31-32).
God's Word is the basis - the foundation - for our beliefs and our lives. Jesus said to keep His commandments if we love Him (John 14:15). Again, Jesus said, "He that hath my commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me" (John 14:21). The Bible is telling us that the true measure of loving Jesus is shown by keeping [living according to] His Word.
The Bible lets us know that those that keep the Lord's Word will be blessed. Keeping God's Word will establish us like a tree and make us fruitful (Psalm 1:1-3). The Bible tells us that God's judgments (words) are more to be desired than gold and are sweeter than honey (Psalm 19:10). God's Word warns us, and His Word states that there is a reward to those who keep His Word (Psalm 19:11).
We must continue in Jesus' Word if we are going to be His disciples and make it to heaven. We must continue to seek the Lord's Spirit and bring ourselves under the authority of the Word in our daily lives. The rewards will not only be found in this life. We will be His disciples, and someday we'll hear Him say, "Well done, thou good and faithful servant/"
