The Epistle to the Romans tells us that humans have the principles of the Law written in their hearts (Romans 2:14). We call this the conscience. People intuitively know right and wrong because we're made in the God's image and likeness. People also recognize the struggle within themselves to follow their consciences; however, most don't understand that they are wrestling with their sin nature, the world, and the devil.
Even with the conscience and a sense of right and wrong, people still need to be "born again." Being "born again" requires finding the narrow gate that Jesus talked about. He said, "...strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it" (Matthew 7:14).
In another place, the Bible says, "There is a way that seemeth right unto a man, btu the end thereof are the ways of death" (Proverbs 14:12). As humans, we try to reason out things we don't really understand and choose ways and methods that don't lead to eternal life. People need to find the gate which Jesus talked about and be guided through that gate. We know that ultimately Jesus is the gate. He said, "I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me" (John 14:6).
There is a right way to come to the Lord and live life. We know that we need to be ready always to give an answer of the reason of the hope that we have (1 Peter 3:15) so that we can point those that don't know the way to the gate and to the way which is Jesus Christ our Savior. There are those around us that are looking for truth and life, but they just don't know the right way.
