Focus on the Lord

We can be standing in the midst of victory and in the perfect will of the Lord and then run for fear because a storm arises. We find an example in Elijah. Elijah had just been used to show the power and authority of God in one of the greatest confrontations between good and evil and then was on the run because Jezebel threatened his life (I Kings 19:1-3).

Jezebel's threat caused Elijah to take his eyes off the Lord and focus on Jezebel. If Elijah had taken time to pray and think about what happened, he probably would have responded differently. In the last 3 1/2 years, God had used Elijah to stop rain for 3 1/2 years, had hidden Elijah, and had miraculously provided for him. God had used Elijah to raise the widow's dead son. Elijah had prayed, and fire had come down from heaven, showing that Jehovah was the true God. He had prayed for rain and it occurred, had slain the prophets of Baal, and had outrun Ahab's chariot from Carmel to Jezreel (I Kings 18:44-46).

However, Jezebel's threat got Elijah's attention, and he became depressed and ran for his life. When Elijah got into the presence of the Lord at Mount Horeb and heard from Him, he was able to refocus his direction. Elijah would go on to mentor Elisha, confront Ahab over Nadab's vineyard, call down fire upon companies of soldiers, and be caught up to heaven in a whirlwind.

When we are in the midst of a storm or spiritual battle, we need to pray and remember what the Lord has done, where He has brought us from, and that the Lord loves us and has good plans for us. The Lord works all things together for good to them that love Him and are the called according to His purpose (Romans 8:28).
