The Promise and Joy of a Harvest

Psalm 126:5-6 lists two of the most precious verses in the Bible. At first, this verse appears to be talking just about sowing and reaping a natural harvest, but notice that these verses speak about sowing in tears, weeping, and bearing precious seed. It is true that in the Bible times, a harvest always brought joy, but what is this about weeping and sowing in tears.

The key to understanding these verses is the precious seed. The seed that is being carried and sown is not just average seed; it is precious seed. The precious seed that is being borne is the Word of God! Jesus talked about seed being sown in the four kinds of ground (Luke 8:5-8). Jesus then explained that the seed was actually the Word of God (Luke 8:11). The book of James tells us that we were begotten by the Word as a type of firstfruits (James 1:18), which means we were begotten by the seed of the Word. Peter says that we were born again of an incorruptible seed, which is the Word of God (I Peter 1:23).

How do the tears and weeping fit into the picture? The tears and weeping are the results of a burden for souls. When we get this Word into our hearts and take it out into the world with a burden for souls that has brought tears to our eyes, the Bible is guaranteeing that there will be a harvest. We don't know when a harvest will occur, but we know that it will come, and there will be joy.

The Bible tells us that one plants and another waters, but it is God who gives the increase (I Corinthians 3:6-7). The seed is good, but to ensure a harvest, we must get to the pale where we shed tears for the lost in our prayers. We must then take this Word forth into the field of the world, and then we are promised a harvest of souls with joy.
