The Love of God

The Bible tells us in I John 4:8 that "God is love." The Bible is also the story of how God has shown that He is love. The first thing the Bible tells us is that all creation was made by God and it was good. Love caused God to create a world full of beauty and good. Next we find that God created life to inhabit the good world He had created, culminating with a man that could enjoy the good world that God had created.

This loving God had so much love that He created man in His own image and likeness (Genesis 1:26-27) and then provided a companion for man like Himself. This loving God provided for all that man would need in this creation; yet when man sinned and relationship was broken, God's love provided mercy - a temporary covering of animal skins - and hope for redemption from sin.

The love of God caused God to have a plan for redemption from sin before man had sinned. The love of God caused God to come as our savior and walk among his own creation (Matthew 1:23, John 1:10-11). The love of God caused God to experience His creation from our point of view, so that He suffered, was rejected, felt pain and sorrow, had to grow up, and had to be subjected to others (Luke 2:51-52).

But most of all the love of God is revealed through the cross. It was love that kept Jesus on the cross so that we could have salvation. Hebrews 12:2 says, "...who for the joy set before him endured the cross..." The joy that Jesus had on the cross was rooted in His love for humanity.

This God who is love came as Jesus, and everything He has done shows His love. Let us be reminded that the Lord is worthy of our love, and let us pray that others would have their eyes opened to see His love and come to know Him.
