Revelation Brings Responsibility

The first time Jesus mentions the cross in the gospels is when He is sending forth His twelve disciples (Matthew 10:38). The next time we see Jesus mentioning the cross is right after Peter has the revelation that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God (Matthew 16:24).

We find that there is a principle that when truth is revealed, a choice is required: we must either follow the truth or reject the truth. Following truth requires crucifixion. Jesus said, "If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, take up his cross and follow me. " As Jesus pointed out, belief in Him would divide families and cause people to hate you (Matthew 10:22,35).

To follow truth requires denying the easy path. It requires facing rejection and misunderstanding. It requires a person to deny their own desires, and it requires going against the flow.

The greatest revelation in life is the revelation that Jesus is the Christ, the one true God manifest in flesh. With the revelation of who Jesus is comes the responsibility to follow that revelation. Jesus is the way, the truth, and the life; God's Word is truth (John 14:6, 17:7). With the revelation of God's truth, we must pick up our cross in order to proclaim that truth.

The truth requires a comittment to follow it, and that requires denying ourselces and picking up our crosses. As we enter 2018, let's ask the Lord to renew our fervor and zeal for the truth and accept our crosses, knowing this great truth we have.
