Rest in Him

On the night of the Last Supper, Jesus began to prepare His disciples for the events that were about to unfold. The disciples were following the man they believed to be the Messiah, and they had preconceived ideas about the days to come. They had no idea that, in a few hours, Jesus would be arrested and the next day crucified. One of the ideas that Jesus tried to impress upon his followers was to rest in Him. Jesus said it this way: "These things have I spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world" (John 16:33).

In the following days, the disciples would go from the depths of fear, doubt, and despair to the heights of hope and glory, but they were going to need to trust in Jesus. Jesus said plainly that His followers would have tribulation in the world. but that He had overcome the world. He gave us His Word so that we would have faith in Him and trust Him. He sent back His Spirit, the Holy Spirit, so that we could rest in Him and have peace.

Psalm 91:1 speaks of resting in the Lord also. It says, "He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty." This means that there is a place where believers can rest and have peace while the world is in turmoil. We can have peace even when we have circumstances in our lives that are beyond our control. Let's trust in Jesus, believe His Word, and enter into that secret place of His Holy Spirit. Let's rest in Jesus.
