Giving Thanks - The Will of God

In America, we have been so blessed by the Lord that we often take blessings for granted. Even in recession, most people are still receiving blessings of the Lord. We have become so used to being blessed that, when things get a little tough or we don't like the circumstances, we often grumble or complain; if not audibly, then in our spirits.

The Bible instructs us, "In everything give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you" (I Thessalonians 5:18). This verse of scripture is one of those verses that you must meditate and pray about in order to get an understanding. The verse does not say, "For everything give thanks...", but "In everything give thanks...” In other words, no matter what type of situation that we find ourselves in, we still need to have a thankful attitude towards life and God.

If we connect another commonly quoted verse which says, "And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose" (Romans 8:28), we can have a reason to give thanks because we know that God is working for our good. If we love God and are living for Him, we can be confident that He is working for our good.

Thankfulness is an essential quality in living for God. One of the first steps of falling away from the Lord is unthankfulness. In Romans 1:21, it says that people knew God, but they didn't glorify Him as God, neither were thankful. Paul says that unthankfulness is one of the signs of the perilous times of the end (II Timothy 3:2). When we are in rough situations or circumstances, if we can learn to be thankful, then we are giving the sacrifice of thanksgiving to God. We should learn to give the sacrifice of thanksgiving because it is the will of God for us in Christ Jesus.
