Fear Breeds Misunderstanding

Fear is a tool of Satan. The Bible tells us that God hasn't given us a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and a sound mind (II Timothy 1:7). The spirit of fear comes from Satan.

Satan will use fear to breed misunderstanding so that he can divide and conquer Christians. Satan will try to use our own fears to make us misinterpret others' actions. The devil will try to tell you that someone doesn't like you or really wants to hurt you when they are really trying to love you.

The Bible gives us an example of how fear caused some people to interpret a good motive as an evil intention.

In I Chronicles chapter 19, Nahash the king of the Ammonites died. David wanted to show kindness to the house of Nahash, so he sent messengers. The princes of the Ammonites were afraid of David, so they convinced their king that David really came to spy out the land. The king of Ammon shaved the men that David had sent and cut off their clothes until it came up to their buttocks. The king of Ammon then sent the messengers away in shame. David then sent the army, and they had a war that destroyed the Ammonites.

If the princes of Ammon had not been fearful, there would have been peace and a good relationship with Israel. Many lives would have been saved. Instead, fear caused the Ammonites to misinterpret David's actions, and much suffering was caused.

This is exactly how the devil tries to work in the church. He tries to take our fear and cause us to fight with our brothers and sisters. The devil tries to make us think that people don't like us or don't love God. We should never accept that our brother or sister has bad intentions or is trying to hurt us until we have talked to them personally and know without a doubt what their intentions are.

The best way to fight this tactic of the devil is to stay in the love of God (Jude 1:21). Love doesn't look for evil or suspect that people have bad motives (I Corinthians 13:5). Fear can't exist where love is because perfect love will cast out fear (I John 4:18). Don't let fear breed misunderstanding, but let love build understanding.
